This is not what I had in mind. . .

. . .when I told my husband I wanted to take some "different" photos on our trip to the city today.

30 minutes out of town, in the middle of a snowstorm, our tire blew.  Thankfully we heard the tire go and pulled over immediately.  It was 23F, and windy, but before we had fully ascertained the situation a kind man stopped by to give us a hand.  What might have potentially been a very long, miserable process took less than an hour, and we were soon on the road again.  Ironically, one of the tasks on our "to do" list today was to get the car serviced, so it didn't take much more time to pick up a few new tires (we had planned on replacing them in the next couple of months anyway).  So we're feeling very grateful for a blessing of safety today.

Laugh if you must, but I'm feeling sentimental

Only a few years ago I was changing diapers and dealing with sleep deprivation on a daily basis.  Now I look around me and see this:

It sounds corny, I know, but sometimes I just can't believe that I--with all of my flaws and mistakes--could possibly be raising these amazing five children.  These are five of the best choices I ever made.

Morning routine

A five-year-old's job is a very serious one.  She must send Daddy off to work every morning at the door with a hug and a kiss.  If there is any deviation in this routine--any deviation whatsoever--she will make Mommy dial Daddy at work and give Daddy a lecture on forgetting to say goodbye to his little daughter.  I know because that is what happened Tuesday morning.  Today, however, it was business as usual.

Goodbye #1, just after he's tied his shoes and gathered his bags

Goodbye #2, at the door.  "Daddy remembered, Mommy!"

The required hug and kiss

"'Bye, Daddy!  Have a nice day!"

There's nothing "static" about our nights at home. . .

. . .Well, maybe there is.

Five children, one fleece blanket.  The possibilities are endless.

We like the UPS truck. . .for different reasons

I like the brown packages they bring me; my kids like the packing material inside them.

Right before the sun goes down. . .

. . .there is a magical moment that occurs just outside our back door.  The sun is normally hidden behind our hill during this time in the winter, but for a few evenings each year it manages to break out and touch the surrounding hills with light just as it disappears below the horizon.  Our backyard is in shadow, the sky is falling into darkness, but the hills just beyond our property line are awash with light.  This is one of those achingly beautiful moments that puts me in awe of the world around me.

How do you like your eggs: scrambled, poached, or. . .frozen?

It's so cold right now (it was around -11F this morning) that when our chickens lay eggs, they freeze. When my husband picked these eggs up they had cracked, so he opened them up and dropped them into a bowl. . .in a solid chunk. They still taste yummy, though.

By the way, the chickens are fine.  We have a heat lamp on them where they roost, and they huddle together for warmth.  It's just the "abandoned" eggs that suffer.  If we don't collect them right away, this is how we find them.
